Let’s be real…despite our boy Weezy’s clear choke-hold on game, Hip Hop is still struggling to maintain its once strong hold on the music industry and pop culture. Even with a million sold in a week and verses that can’t wait, no one can honestly expect Wayne to revive a Hip Hop that has reduced itself to creating ridiculous beefs over who’s jeans is the tightest (yeah…that one is to you Jim Jones. And for the record, your’s are tighter.) and crying in the streets over people not jumping on your track (Game…I have much respect for you and what you were trying to do but to the point of tears in an interview??? There is something else there that going on besides just this not being your kinda Hip Hop, ya dig?).

That being said, I must admit that my heart definitely warmed over this week when the official G-Unit record sales numbers rolled in. Finally, my fellow Hip Hop heads made a united stand against washed up acts that have ZERO to say. I respect and ,surprisingly, agree with 50 on a lot of the stuff he says…as far fetched as some of it may be, but G-Unit has been dead in my eyes for a minute and I know I’m not the only one here. Blogging more than Perez about Game and Buck is not enough to make me (or any other true Hip Hop head, for that matter) buy the album from G-Unit when I know like you know that they have nothing to say at the moment. I love Banks just as much as the next female, but a suave voice doesn’t push me outta my bed on a Tuesday morning to get in line to get a CD. So, I hate to say it, Fif, but you had to see this one coming. I think you, like many others, were hoping it wouldn’t and at least a few Hip Hoppers would have supported you out of obligation, but things are starting to change.

I mean, really, think back. Remember when 50 was our Wayne. (Bear with me now…) Not lyrically, of course, but remember when bootleg copies of Get Rich or Die Trying were in every car that pasted on the block, but everyone still said “Yeah, but I gotta make sure I’m in Best Buy in the morning when the real one comes out though.” Remember when 50 was our great Hip Hop messiah much like Wayne is today. We have found a new savior (though in my opinion Wayne has been a beast WELL before this…the world is just catching up, but that’s neither here nor there). And, real talk, he’s more concerned with the verses he drops rather than his Vitamin Water sales. He doesn’t have to create a random beef to barely push 100,000 units. He just spits raw, powerful FIRE. He just does Hip Hop.

So, while YOU were sleeping, 50 Cent, the tide was turning and definitely not in your favor. I suggest you wake up sooner than later and get your focus back on giving us raw Hip Hop. You know, where you head was back in like ’01-’02….because the fall from Hip Hop icon to Hip Hop has-been is a long one.
